| Insulation 101 |
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, energy use for commercial buildings is projected to grow by 1.7 percent per year until 2025. With the proper insulation system, you can significantly reduce the energy costs in your building. In selecting insulation for your building, the project team needs to evaluate thermal requirements and satisfy energy codes for your project. By selecting the right insulation, a reduction in the size of your heating and cooling equipment can be achieved. Listed below are the four basic types of insulation and the benefits each has to offer.

Loose Fill: Made up of loose fiber or fiber pellets and usually costs more than Batt insulation, but reduces air leakage better as well as providing superior sound insulation.

Batt and Blanket: Generally the least expensive and is made up of mineral fiber used for insulating below floors, above ceilings and within walls.

Rigid Board: Commonly made from fiberglass and polyurethane and comes in a variety of thicknesses. This type of insulation is used for reproofing work on flat roofs, on basement walls and as perimeter insulation on concrete slabs and in cathedral ceilings.

Spray Foam: A two-part liquid containing polymer and a foaming agent that is sprayed through a nozzle into wall, ceiling, and floor cavities. This spray insulation is used typically for retrofits; it works very well for irregularly shaped areas and around obstructions.
